Bryan Hopkins

"The juxtaposition of glazed and unglazed surfaces combined with industrial textures not typically associated with porcelain produce a tension in the work, and the sometimes violent and rough treatment is at odds with porcelain’s implicit societal qualities such as upper-class association and assumption of purity and preciousness."

Bryan
Hopkins is a potter/sculptor who received his professional training
at West Chester University of Pennsylvania,
where
he earned his Bachelor of Science and Liberal Studies with a Studio
Art/Photography minor in 1990 and at the State University of New
York at New Paltz, where he received his Masters of Fine Arts in
Ceramics and Ceramic Sculpture in 1995 . He has worked as an instructor
in the Fine Art Department at the Niagara County Community College
since 1997 and as a Ceramic Studio Coordinator and Instructor at
Buffalo Arts Studio since February of 2000 . Always involved in
many of the area's art activities, Hopkins has participated in "Craft
in Western New York" at the Burchfield-Penny Art Center, "Porcelain
2000 " at Esmay Fine
Art in Rochester, and the " HERD About Buffalo" outdoor sculpture
competition, all in the year 2000 .
He
has also served as a lecturer and demonstrator at Daeman and Buffalo
State Colleges. Most recently Hopkins exhibited in a group show
Jonesing at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. Hopkins
is currently working in clay at Buffalo Arts Studio.
