Joanna Angie anna Angie

Joanna Angie’s work is greatly influenced by her extensive examination of ancient religious philosophies.  She has studied the Chinese I Ching philosophy for twenty years, as well as the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism, which have become a fundamental influence in her current work.  Angie has traveled extensively throughout Tibet, China, Israel, and Costa Rica.  In China, she followed the yellow river into Tibet, ending at the birthplace of the Dalai Lama.  She visited Buddhist monasteries, while also bearing witness to the absence of monasteries that had been destroyed.  Angie’s understanding and first hand knowledge of world cultures and religions generated a concern for the genocide that has occurred in both a historic and contemporary context.

Each of the works seen here reference Tibetan Thangka paintings, but are done in the Western format of oil on canvas.  From top to bottom - the image White Tara represents wisdom and compassion, Green Tara represents active compassion, and Prayer for Tibet represents that it is safe to build a monastery.

These paintings are part of a recent series done in honor of his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the people of Tibet. The series recognizes the 1.2 million Tibetans murdered and the 5, 994 monasteries destroyed by the Chinese government.  The Chinese, also destroyed many sacred Buddhist images such as these, in their process of annihilation.
