Buffalo Arts Studio presents Kilter, an exhibition of large-scale representational and figurative paintings by local Buffalo artist Bob Fleming. Fleming is a visual artist whose practice includes painting, printmaking, and other media, including film. Kilter is on display July 28—September 27, 2023, with an opening reception on Friday, July 28, 5:00—8:00 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The imaginative possibilities of responding to the world are vast. No two people, let alone artists, are affected in the same way. Fleming’s work is a reaction to living in an era that always seems to de-prioritize our shared humanity. The images come from observing and absorbing material elements of both his small, personal universe and in the wider world, including, consciously or not, the omnipresent media. There is no intentionally specific or direct meaning to his work, however, in the relationship of the artwork to the viewer – it is hoped that a viewer may confront the question of what kind of world we live in and make.

Some of the themes Fleming is currently interested in are the sense that people are off balance or Kilter in their lives, the difficulty of meaningful and sustained personal interconnections, the human disruptions caused by economic disasters and other crises, the cost of violence, and the myth of the “good war.”

The pieces in the show include paintings, prints, and some photographic material. Fleming especially looks forward to showing a few large paintings from his Unbalanced body of work in the spacious Buffalo Arts Studio gallery. The exhibition will also include smaller works on paper which reflect recent projects and thinking.

Bob Fleming has a BA in Political Science from Cornell University and worked as a lawyer for a number of years. During this time, he also maintained an active art practice and studied Printmaking at University at Buffalo. In 2018, Fleming co-founded and opened Mirabo Press, a printmaking studio and edition facility in Buffalo, New York. Fleming has exhibited at Western New York Book Arts Center, Nichols School Gallery at Flickinger Center, Big Orbit Gallery, El Museo Gallery, Main Street Arts, Dolce Valvo Art Center at Niagara County Community College, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
