Barraclough’s current paintings are a continuation of his decade-long consideration of the day-to-day through the contemplation of color, light, and space. Although he limits himself to a minimal vocabulary, each of Barraclough’s works reflects a careful, deliberate process. “I responded in a completely intuitive way aesthetically, responding to color or surface, where it may have lead, nothing beyond that.” Both his works on paper and those on canvas quietly unfold, radiating calm energy produced by the complex relationships between each shape and color. This energy is amplified through the repetition of contrasting forms.
Dennis Barraclough is a Buffalo Arts Studio Studio Artist and a respected sculptor, painter, and educator. He received a BFA in printmaking at SUNY at Buffalo in 1970 and an MFA in sculpture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1972. He has exhibited throughout the US and China and recently in Venice Italy where his work was included in the 2013 Venice Biennale.
